Increasing public awareness of, and support for philanthropy
We are working in a variety of ways to improve public understanding of the nonprofit sector:
The APPC Post. Our e-newsletter, the APPC Post, contains updates on the philanthropy field in the region. It also reports on the latest involvements of our Board of Directors and Chief Executive.
Biannual conferences. We have also developed biannual conferences as agenda-setting exercises. They are preceded by national-level consultations in participating societies that are designed to allow participants to give inputs on the conference theme. The consultations involve key actors in philanthropy and the nonprofit sectors. We document the inputs collected from these discussions in “background papers” that later serve as conference materials.
After the conferences, consultations are held to bring back to the national level the conference recommendations for specific action planning.
Through these exercises, we have developed relationships with key actors in philanthropic and nonprofit sectors to better understand the issues that arise from specific societal contexts.
See our Events page for upcoming conference information.
Support for philanthropy and NPO resource mobilization projects. We support regional conferences, research studies and other projects on the wide range of concepts and practices in contemporary Asian philanthropy and nonprofit resource mobilization strategies. These have included:
- A regional conference on Supporting the Nonprofit Sector in Asia (Bangkok, 1998)
- The Asia and Pacific regional conferences of the International Society for Third Sector Research (Bangkok, 1999 and Osaka, 2000)
- Research on corporate social involvement and business ethics education in Asian business schools
- Research on NGO responses to the Asian economic crisis in Indonesia, Korea and Thailand
Knowledge and resource base for philanthropy and NPO sector. We regularly provide resources, information and participants in response to requests by other groups organizing in-country and regional conferences related to philanthropy and the NPO sector. These include:
- Identifying international participants for an International Conference on the Nonprofit Sector and Development organized by Tsinghua University’s NGO Research Center. This conference was an important step in China’s official declaration of social organizations and partners in economic development.
- Supporting the publication of this conference’s proceedings in both English and Chinese
